Cellulose, hemicellulose – Insoluble fiber found in cereal grains and the cell walls of many fruits and vegetables. Some types of fiber fall into both categories, such as oligosaccharides and resistant starches that may be naturally occurring or synthetically made. The National Academy of Medicine defines fiber as: 1) dietary fibers (nondigestible carbohydrates and lignans) that occur naturally in plants, and 2) functional fibers that are extracted from plants or synthetically made and are nondigestible with a beneficial health effect in humans. In addition, there are many subtypes of soluble and insoluble fibers, some of which occur naturally in plant foods and others that are synthetically made. These properties offer health benefits such as slowing down digestion, delaying blood sugar rises after meals, promoting healthy colonies of bacteria, or having a laxative effect. Fibers that are not broken down by bacteria, called nonfermentable, travel intact to the colon and can add bulk and weight to stool so it is easier to pass. It can be viscous with a gel-like quality, or fermentable because it acts as food for gut bacteria that break down and ferment it. Under the umbrella terms of insoluble and soluble fibers, you may see fiber described in other ways. ![]() Foods with insoluble fibers include whole wheat products (especially wheat bran), quinoa, brown rice, legumes, leafy greens like kale, almonds, walnuts, seeds, and fruits with edible skins like pears and apples. Insoluble fiber, which does not dissolve in water, can help food move through your digestive system, promoting regularity and helping prevent constipation. Foods with soluble fiber include oatmeal, chia seeds, nuts, beans, lentils, apples, and blueberries. Soluble fiber, which dissolves in water, can help lower glucose levels as well as help lower blood cholesterol. Types of Fiberįiber comes in two varieties, both beneficial to health: Great sources are whole grains, whole fruits and vegetables, legumes, and nuts. Fiber helps regulate the body’s use of sugars, helping to keep hunger and blood sugar in check.Ĭhildren and adults need at least 25 to 35 grams of fiber per day for good health, but most Americans get only about 15 grams a day. Though most carbohydrates are broken down into sugar molecules called glucose, fiber cannot be broken down into sugar molecules, and instead it passes through the body undigested. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that the body can’t digest. ![]()

In the style of the day it is large across but thin in the rim, made of polished wood and aluminum, and has racy "lightening holes" drilled into its spokes. The wheel itself appears high-set, but is lovely to behold. Both column and pedals angle away from the engine, so you are immediately conscious of sitting with your legs slightly askew and with the wheel canted in your hands. The wheel still adjusts for reach via a friction collar on the column and, reviving a good idea from the classic Jaguar SS 100, can be adjusted for rake via a wrench. However, the instrument panel and steering wheel seem farther away. In fact, shoulder and head room are each an inch tighter than in the 150 coupe. Within the shorter wheelbase, the engine sits farther back than in the XK 140/150, and while interior volume is adequate, it is hardly generous. You are comfortable enough once settled, but the D-Type's "performance-first" racing philosophy is very evident in the snug XKE cockpit. At a diameter of 16 inches, the steering wheel commandeers some of the space your legs want as they slide in. The sill is relatively high off the ground, and a bulky seven inches wide. This impression of compact efficiency continues as you open the very short door and fold yourself into its narrow opening (fewer than 21 inches separate windshield post from latch pillar). And it weighs several hundred pounds less than the closed XK 150. Matched roofline to roofline, the XKE coupe stands a remarkable seven inches lower. Its rounded bodywork is an inch wider, but track measures an inch-and-a-half narrower. Yet against the Jaguar XK 150, especially, the XKE seems almost petite.ĭespite that long nose, it is an inch-and-a-half shorter overall, and six inches briefer in wheelbase. Twelve years of familiarity with the Jaguar XK-series had bred a feeling in some quarters that Jaguar's two-seaters were physically too large and heavy to be "true" sports cars. Yet even for confirmed Jaguar enthusiasts, this car was something new. Better, the XKE performed almost like the D-Type.Įven so, its great prowess came with all the silky smooth sophistication customary in Jaguars, that feline merging of muscle with manner that left no one unmoved on levels both intellectual and intestinal. The XKE was the child of the Jaguar D-Type, three times a winner at LeMans, and looked it. Packaged in one wind-piercing projectile was a race-proven twin-cam engine with three carbs, a four-speed gearbox, a limited-slip differential, fully independent suspension, all-wheel disc brakes (still inboard at the rear!), rack-and-pinion steering, and a lightweight chassis featuring a fusion of space-frame and monocoque technologies. ![]() ![]() You can also use object notation to specify the settings. One mechanic of the game that is somewhat interesting is that each unit, tower, and bullet fired is modelled in the physics engine. There are no end of level stats or bonuses for leftover money, and while upgraded towers do more damage I couldn't see numbers anywhere. Towers and upgrades are instant and there aren't any extra buttons to press. Towers are placed in a few fixed positions and have 3 levels of upgrades. This game is a bit lacking in that department. The tower defense genre has dozens of titles that have innovative twists and interesting mechanics. ![]() On the flip side, the gameplay mechanics are not very sophisticated. You can move the camera just about anywhere and there's also an option to see the game from a tower's perspective (watching it fire at enemy units). The graphical style is pretty inspired - everything looks like it's made out of cardboard and paper and the levels look like a child's playset. War in a Box is a basic tower defense game. Otherwise, just stick to Bloons TD 6 or even PvZ (which is another fairly old game but has TONS of content). If you don't mind the dated nature of this game, go ahead and give it a try. It is by no means a bad game, and in my opinion is reasonably priced considering the content is has to offer, but in this current era of games, it's hard to really recommend this to people unless they're just looking for something to pass the time. Overall, I think this game sits on a 6/10. That isn't to say this game is bad, but it does mean that it is more or less dated in features. ![]() In a day and age where tower defense games have pretty much evolved to include a massive variety of towers and foes, along with higher degrees of replayability as well as a multitude of viable strategies, one may wind up moving on from this game in favor of those very kinds of TD games. That being said though, there really isn't a whole lot to this game if you beat it in its entirety while the physics/cover gimmick does make things a bit more challenging if enemy husks get flung in a certain way that they block the next shot fired, it's really about the only "unique" thing about this game. Another feature this game has that is quite interesting is how physics/cover can affect how effective your turrets can be against the enemy, so some careful planning is needed to achieve victory. It consists of 24 levels that increase in difficulty and/or complexity as you progress further into the game, as well as an "expert" mode where you have less resources to work with than if you were playing normal mode. For what is essentially a 10-year-old game originally (presumably) intended for the mobile platforms, it is fairly decent. If I am to be honest in my opinion, I would say that this is one of those games where a "maybe" option would be nice when it comes to recommendations. ![]() ![]() “It brought us even closer than we already were. “We were together 24/7 for 80 days and had a great adventure,” says Hampi.
